Located near the centre of the northern part of West Carleton Township, Stonecrest is a public elementary school offering regular English and Early French Immersion programs from kindergarten through Grade 8. In addition, it offers a Middle French Immersion program for Grades 4 to 8. Its attendance boundary for the regular English program includes the Dunrobin area and extends west into the Fitzroy
area for JK to Grade 6. The English program for Grades 7 and 8 now takes
in all of the northern area of West Carleton, comprising the former Fitzroy and
Torbolton townships. The Early French Immersion program serves all of the northern area of West
Carleton (the former Fitzroy and Torbolton townships) from kindergarten to Grade
8. The attendance boundary for Middle French Immersion includes all of West Carleton
(Fitzroy, Torbolton and Huntley), except for a small area on the edge of Stittsville to the south.
This
year, Stonecrest welcomes students from Fitzroy Centennial Public School into
its Grade 7 and 8 classes for the regular English program. With strong
viable enrolment in the Intermediate grades in the English, Early French
Immersion and Middle French Immersion programs, a full range of programming can
be offered in these grades, including instrumental music and design and
technology.
Having
consulted with its school community, Stonecrest is implementing a Balanced
School Day schedule for Grades 1 through 8 this year. The opening and
closing times remain the same, but the day is organized into three larger blocks
of uninterrupted instructional time, with two breaks for nutrition and recess
(in late morning and early afternoon). Schools following a Balanced School
Day schedule in the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board have found it provides
more uninterrupted learning time for students as well as better opportunities
for extracurricular activities during the two longer breaks. The half-day
kindergarten programs are not affected by this change.
Designed with the assistance of a User Committee that included experienced school staff, parents and community representatives, Stonecrest is built in two wings with a central core of gymnasium, library and office space. Phase 1 of Stonecrest E.S. opened in September 1998 as a kindergarten to Grade 5 school, and
added one grade per year, culminating with the addition of Grade 8 in 2001-2002. The Phase 2 addition, with full intermediate facilities and additional primary classrooms, opened for use in September 2002.
During 2008-2009, a further addition will be constructed at the western end of
the school, and it's hoped that this addition will be ready for September 2009.
Construction is expected to begin as early as possible in the spring of 2009,
and plans are being made to complete the project with minimal disruption to
students during the school year.
Stonecrest students have the option of entering the Middle French Immersion program at Stonecrest in Grade
4. Students who are currently in Grades 5 and 6 at Stonecrest may also
choose to enter the Late French Immersion program at Stephen Leacock Public
School in Kanata when they reach Grade 7; the Late French Immersion program is
being phased out across the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board, but this
option is being kept open for those students who had already passed the
opportunity for Middle French Immersion.
Students who complete Grade 8 at Stonecrest E.S. will be directed to West Carleton S.S. in Dunrobin for Grades 9 through 12 English and French Immersion programs. Students living closer to Arnprior than to West Carleton S.S. continue to have the option of attending Arnprior District H.S. Students entering vocational programs attend Sir Guy Carleton S.S. in Nepean, and special education students who have been identified as gifted may choose to attend the nearest of six secondary gifted centres at Bell H.S. in Nepean.
