Located near the centre of the
northern part of the former West Carleton Township, Stonecrest is a public elementary
school offering regular English and Early French Immersion programs from
kindergarten through Grade 8. The attendance boundary for the regular English
and Early French Immersion programs includes all of the West Carleton area north
of the Thomas Dolan Parkway and Panmure Road. In addition, subject to
having sufficient enrolment in the program, it offers a Middle French Immersion program for Grades 4 to 8;
if enrolment is not enough for a viable program at Stonecrest, students will be
directed to a Kanata school for Middle French Immersion. The attendance boundary for Middle French Immersion
covers all of West Carleton, including the Huntley area, except for a small area on the edge of Stittsville to the south.
Students
who were in Grade 6 at Stonecrest in 2009-2010 have the option of entering the
Late French Immersion program in Grade
7 at Stephen Leacock Public School in Kanata. The Late French Immersion program is
being phased out across the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board, and this
option was retained to serve students who had no opportunity to enter a Middle
French Immersion program. September 2010 will be the last year for entry
into Late French Immersion.
Strong
enrolment in the Intermediate grades has allowed Stonecrest to provide a rich range of programming
in Grades 7 and 8, including instrumental music, visual arts, and hands-on
technology. The active school council is very supportive of enhancing
learning opportunities for all grades.
Stonecrest has successfully implemented a Balanced
School Day schedule for Grades 1 through 8, in which the day is organized into three large blocks
of uninterrupted instructional time, with two breaks for nutrition and recess
(in late morning and early afternoon). Schools following a Balanced School
Day schedule in the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board have found it provides
more uninterrupted learning time for students as well as better opportunities
for extracurricular activities during the two longer breaks. Junior and
Senior Kindergarten programs do not follow the Balanced School Day schedule, and
continue to be offered as half-day programs in the 2010-2011 school year.
Designed with the assistance of a User Committee that included experienced school staff, parents and community representatives, Stonecrest is built in two wings with a central core of gymnasium, library and office space. Phase 1 of Stonecrest Elementary School opened in September 1998 as a kindergarten to Grade 5 school, and
added one grade per year, culminating with the addition of Grade 8 in 2001-2002. The Phase 2 addition, with full intermediate facilities and additional primary classrooms, opened for use in September 2002.
During 2008-2009, a further addition was built at the west end of the school,
which opened in September 2009. The possibility of adding a fixed stage to
the gymnasium is still under consideration by OCDSB staff.
Students who complete Grade 8 at Stonecrest Elementary School will be directed to West Carleton Secondary School in Dunrobin for Grades 9 through 12 English and French Immersion programs.
Special education students who have been identified as gifted may choose to attend the secondary gifted centre at Bell High School in
Bells Corners.
Students may also apply to attend a specialized program such as a vocational
program (Sir Guy Carleton S.S.), a fine arts program (Canterbury H.S.), or an
International Baccalaureate program (Colonel By H.S.).
