South Carleton High School main entrance, Richmond, ONLocated at the south end of Richmond, South Carleton High School is a public high school offering a comprehensive academic program for regular English and French Immersion students in Grades 9 through 12. Its attendance boundary covers Rideau and Goulbourn, and extends as far north as Highway 417 in the vicinity of Stittsville.  Students in southwest Gloucester and the Rideau Forest area of Osgoode also have the option of attending South Carleton High School.

South Carleton High School is one of the largest high schools in the OCDSB, and its students are able to choose from a wide range of course options in English and French Immersion.  In addition to its general academic strengths, South Carleton's fine arts and technology programming options are among the finest in the OCDSB.  The school is semestered, with the first semester from September to January, and the second semester from February to June.  Most students take four credit courses per semester.

A South Carleton High School playing fieldOriginally constructed in 1952, South Carleton High School has seen many renovations and additions over the years.  Science labs were upgraded some years ago to current standards; the visual arts area has also been recently renovated.  Over the past several years, there have been a number of investments in improving the school building quality.

In 2004-2005, an extensive study was undertaken to look at alternative possibilities for serving secondary students from the Rideau and Goulbourn areas, particularly in light of high interest in having a public high school located in Stittsville, the largest community in the area served by South Carleton H.S.  The responses from the school community clearly indicated a continuing need for South Carleton in its present location, as well as a need for a public high school in the Stittsville area.  In June 2008, a new high school for Stittsville was approved as a capital priority for the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board, and we are now awaiting provincial funding approval to proceed.  The timing of construction will depend on when the province makes capital funding available.

South Carleton High School east wingSouth Carleton H.S. has traditionally supported a range of extra-curricular activities, with particular strength in student leadership, athletic and musical theatre activities.  Since 1998, three South Carleton students have served one-year terms as Student Trustees for the OCDSB.

Nearly 60% of South Carleton graduates enter university programs, and over 30% enter community colleges, many with scholarships. The remaining graduates may enter other post-secondary training or apprenticeship programs; a few go directly into the workplace.
