Goulbourn_Middle_School front entranceLocated on the southern fringe of Stittsville, Goulbourn Middle School is a public elementary school offering regular English and Early French Immersion programs from Grade 6 to Grade 8, and a Late French Immersion program from Grade 7 to Grade 8. The attendance boundary for the English and Early French Immersion programs covers the eastern part of Stittsville and the eastern rural area of Goulbourn, including Richmond. The attendance boundary for Late French Immersion encompasses all of Goulbourn, extending north of Stittsville to Highway 417.

The grade structure, programs and attendance boundaries for Goulbourn Middle School are currently under review, and will change with the opening of a new elementary school for Stittsville in September 2011.  At present it is proposed that Stittsville Public School and the new elementary school at 111 Hartsmere Drive would become JK to Grade 6 schools for the regular English and Early French Immersion programs, feeding students to Goulbourn Middle School at Grade 7 instead of Grade 6.  Students from Munster Elementary School and Richmond Public School would continue to move to Goulbourn Middle School for Grades 6 to 8 in the regular English program, and Middle French Immersion would be phased in for Grades 6 to 8 to accommodate MFI students from Richmond Public School.  Consultation on the proposed boundary changes is on-going, and full details of the current proposals are available   here. The Board will make its decision on the new attendance boundaries in November 2010, and will also decide whether and how to phase student moves to their new locations.

Built in 1967 as a K-8 school with eight classrooms, Goulbourn Middle School had major additions in 1970 and 1986, providing the full range of specialized classrooms to support the Grade 7 and 8 programs, as well as a well-used computer network. It has a large playground with sports fields, and a cross-country track through a naturally wooded area.

Goulbourn Middle School playing fieldGoulbourn Middle School operates on a Balanced School Day schedule.  The students' day is organized into three larger blocks of uninterrupted instructional time, with two breaks for nutrition/recess.  The Balanced School Day schedule provides more uninterrupted learning time for students and better opportunities for extracurricular activities during the two longer breaks.

September 2010 is the last opportunity for students to enter the Late French Immersion program in Grade 7, as this program is being phased out.  As noted above, In the longer term, it is possible that Goulbourn Middle School will phase in the Middle French Immersion program now that this program has been established at RIchmond Public School.

On completion of Grade 8 at Goulbourn M.S., students are directed to South Carleton High School in Richmond for Grades 9 through 12 English and French Immersion programs.  A new public high school for Stittsville has been identified as an OCDSB priority for new school construction, but the timing of this project will depend on the availability of funding.  South Carleton High School will continue to be needed to serve the southern part of the Goulbourn area even after Stittsville has its own high school.  Special education students who have been identified as gifted may choose to attend the secondary gifted centre at Bell High School in Bells Corners.  Students may also apply to attend a specialized program such as a vocational program (Sir Guy Carleton S.S.), a fine arts program (Canterbury H.S.), or an International Baccalaureate program (Colonel By H.S.).
