Frederick Banting Secondary Alternate Program site, side viewThe Frederick Banting Secondary Alternate Program is one of several such programs across the jurisdiction of the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board, designed for students whose individual needs and circumstances are not best served in a traditional school setting.  Individual student programs are organized around the appropriate combination of academic subjects, Life Skills courses, co-operative education and independent learning. Creativity and critical thinking are fostered and celebrated.  Most Frederick Banting students come from the areas of Stittsville, West Carleton, Rideau-Goulbourn and Kanata.

Students at Frederick Banting have the opportunity to complete their Ontario Secondary School Diploma requirements and continue into post-secondary programs, to return to traditional schools to complete their programs, or to move directly into the workplace.

Frederick Banting Secondary Alternate Program site, front viewThe Secondary Alternate Program was first established by the former Carleton Board of Education in 1980 with one site in Nepean.  An eastern location was added in 1988, and the Frederick Banting program was added in 1990, occupying rented space in several different locations in Kanata from 1990 to June 2006.  In September 2006, the Frederick Banting Secondary Alternate Program moved to Stittsville, where it is now housed in the former Stittsville Public School facility.  The building was originally constructed in 1947 as a two-room school, and grew through five additions between 1953 and 1967.

Frederick Banting students have a remarkable record of success, thanks to an exceptional caring staff and a long association with a supportive community.  Many local employers have welcomed Frederick Banting students for cooperative education programs.
