Current Board News: Decisions and Issues

Let's make
every school
an excellent
school!

Especially for Zone 1, this web page is intended to provide up-to-date information about issues currently under discussion that may have significance for Zone 1 school communities, Board consultation processes relevant to Zone 1 school communities, and recent Board decisions likely to be of interest to Zone 1 school communities.

Of General Interest:

3 September 2008.  OTTAWA STUDENT TRANSPORTATION AUTHORITY.  The Ottawa-Carleton District School Board and the Ottawa Catholic School Board have now established the Ottawa Student Transportation Authority to manage school bus transportation for both boards.  The main telephone number for OSTA is 613-224-8800 and the fax number is 613-224-8840.  This new arrangement is expected to facilitate more efficient service for students of both boards over the next few years.

3 September 2008.  CHANGES TO FRENCH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE FOR 2008-2009.

CORE FRENCH.  Core French continues to be offered to all students in the regular English program from JK to Grade 8 and through secondary school to Grade 12.  Improvements to our Core French programming are on-going.

EARLY FRENCH IMMERSION.  Early French Immersion (SK to Grade 8 and through secondary school to Grade 12) continues to be offered at all of its former locations in Zone 1 schools.  Changes have been introduced to the "time allocation" model, so that all schools will be delivering the same subjects in French at each grade level, for greater consistency.  The Board is also making changes to its special education delivery so that EFI students in need of some special education support will have better access to that support.

MIDDLE FRENCH IMMERSION.  Middle French Immersion (Grades 4 to 8) continues to be offered at Stonecrest Elementary School for students in the West Carleton area.  Students in Stittsville and the rest of the Goulbourn area are directed to Katimavik Elementary School for Middle French Immersion.  A new Middle French Immersion program is being introduced at Kars Public School this month, September 2008, to serve students from the Rideau area.  Additional sites for Middle French Immersion are being planned for implementation in future years.  Changes have been introduced to the "time allocation" model for MFI, with a view to improving the program and having consistent delivery from one school to another.

LATE FRENCH IMMERSION.  This school year is the first year of the phase-out of Late French Immersion (Grades 7 and 8).  In Zone 1, Late French Immersion continues to be offered at Goulbourn Middle School and Rideau Valley Middle School, but students from the West Carleton area are now directed to Stephen Leacock Public School in Kanata for Late French Immersion, as the LFI program has been discontinued at Fitzroy Centennial Public School.

REVIEW OF FRENCH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE PROGRAMMING IN HIGH SCHOOLS.  During 2008-2009, a review is being conducted to look at ways of improving French programming in OCDSB secondary schools.

West Carleton and rural Kanata Areas:

20 October 2008.  DESIGN FOR STONECREST ELEMENTARY SCHOOL ADDITION - UPDATE.  The design for the new addition to Stonecrest E.S. is beginning to take shape, and will add a block of 6 classrooms to the west end of the school, fronting on Kinburn Side Road, for completion by September 2009.  The addition will also include student and staff washrooms, and storage space.  There will also be some renovation to existing rooms, such as music and art rooms and the design & technology classroom.  The Stonecrest school council made a presentation to the Business Services Committee on 15 October to request that the Board consider creating a fixed stage for the gymnasium, instead of the existing fold-down stage, as part of the renovations.  OCDSB staff are now investigating the feasibility and possible cost of doing this, and more information should be available for trustees' consideration at the 27 October Board meeting.  Construction of the addition is expected to start as early as possible in the spring, for completion by September 2009.

26 September 2008.  CONSTRUCTION OF HUNTLEY CENTENNIAL PUBLIC SCHOOL ADDITION UNDERWAY.  Work has begun on the 10-classroom addition to Huntley Centennial P.S.  Renovations to existing interior space have now mostly been completed.

Rideau Area:

20 October 2008.  POTENTIAL ADDITION TO RIDEAU VALLEY MIDDLE SCHOOL TO HOUSE KARS PUBLIC SCHOOL STUDENTS - UPDATE.  OCDSB staff are continuing their discussions with the Ministry of Education regarding a potential addition to Rideau Valley MS to accommodate Kars PS students, given that the Kars PS building, while currently safe and serviceable for its students, is in the Prohibitive to Repair category.  Development of a design for the addition is expected to proceed through this fall. A report was brought to the Business Services Committee on 15 October

Goulbourn and Stittsville Area:

3 September 2008.  PROGRESS TOWARDS A PUBLIC HIGH SCHOOL FOR STITTSVILLE IN ADDITION TO SOUTH CARLETON HIGH SCHOOL.  Recognizing the rapid growth in Stittsville, the Board has identified a public high school for Stittsville among its top priorities for new school construction.  South Carleton High School will continue to be needed to serve the areas of rural Goulbourn and Rideau.  Our challenge, as always, will be obtaining capital funding for this school in a timely way.
