Play area at A. Lorne Cassidy Elementary SchoolLocated in the Crossing Bridge area of Stittsville adjacent to thecommunity park, A. Lorne Cassidy is a public elementary school offering regular English and Early French Immersion programs from kindergarten to Grade 8. Students in the regular English program are mainly drawn from Stittsville west of Main Street. The attendance boundary for the Early French Immersion program, which begins at Senior Kindergarten, extends farther to take in the western part of rural Goulbourn including Munster and Ashton. The Junior Kindergarten year is the same for all students regardless of their intended future program choice.

The attendance boundaries for A. Lorne Cassidy Elementary School are currently under review, and will change with the opening of a new elementary school for Stittsville in September 2011. At present it is proposed that part of the A. Lorne Cassidy attendance area, likely the area of Stittsville south of Abbott Street and west of Stittsville Main Street, will be directed to the new school at 111 Hartsmere Drive for the regular English and Early French Immersion programs, and a Middle French Immersion program (Grades 4 to 8) will be introduced at A. Lorne Cassidy, subject to enrolment. Consultation on the proposed boundary changes is on-going, and full details of the current proposals are available   here. The Board will make its decision on the new attendance boundaries in November 2010, and will also decide whether and how to phase student moves to their new locations.

Front entrance at A. Lorne Cassidy Elementary SchoolDesigned with the assistance of a User Committee that included experienced school staff, parents and community representatives, the school provides excellent facilities for its students at all grade levels, including a well-used computer network and Media Resource Centre. A large bustling school, A. Lorne Cassidy is well supported by an active school council and many parent volunteers. It has received recognition for its ethnocultural equity initiatives, and also for its implementation of technology in the curriculum.

A. Lorne Cassidy Elementary School operates on a Balanced School Day schedule for Grades 1 to 8. The students' day is organized into three larger blocks of uninterrupted instructional time, with two breaks for nutrition and recess (in late morning and early afternoon). The Balanced School Day schedule provides more uninterrupted learning time for students and better opportunities for extracurricular activities during the two longer breaks. Junior and Senior Kindergarten programs do not follow the Balanced School Day schedule, and continue to be offered as half-day programs in the 2010-2011 school year.

Students from A. Lorne Cassidy may choose to enter the Middle French Immersion program at Katimavik Elementary School in Kanata at Grade 4. Students who are entering Grade 7 in September 2010 may choose to attend Goulbourn Middle School for Late French Immersion; the Late French Immersion program is nearing the end of its phase-out, and 2010 is the last year in which Grade 7 students will be accepted into this program.

On completion of Grade 8, students are directed to South Carleton High School in Richmond for Grades 9 through 12 English and French Immersion programs. A new public high school for Stittsville has been identified as an OCDSB priority for new school construction, but the timing of this project is now dependent on receipt of funding approval from the provincial Ministry of Education. Special education students who have been identified as gifted may choose to attend the secondary gifted centre at Bell High School in Bells Corners. Students may also apply to attend a specialized program such as a vocational program (Sir Guy Carleton S.S.), a fine arts program (Canterbury H.S.), or an International Baccalaureate program (Colonel By H.S.).
