Ottawa-Carleton District School Board

OCDSB Logo © OCDSB 2000 The Ottawa-Carleton District School Board is the National Capital's English public school board, and the largest of four district school boards serving Ottawa-Carleton with educational programs for children from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 12 as well as adult and continuing education programs.

The OCDSB serves about 72,000 regular day students spread across 2,760 square kilometres comprising the former municipalities of Cumberland, Gloucester, Goulbourn, Kanata, Nepean, Osgoode, Ottawa, Rideau, Rockcliffe Park, Vanier and West Carleton, amalgamated into the new City of Ottawa in January 2001.

The OCDSB operates 117 elementary schools (including two special education centres) and 26 secondary schools (including two vocational schools and one adult high school) plus 4 secondary alternate sites. During 2010-2011, a new elementary school will be built in the southern part of Stittsville to open in September 2011, and work will be completed on an addition to Rideau Valley Middle School in Kars as a replacement for Kars Public School, with the move of students and staff into the new facility expected for January 2011.

Educational programs follow the Ontario curriculum, and have been developed to meet a wide range of student needs and interests. In addition to the regular English program with Core French starting in Junior Kindergarten, the OCDSB offers an Early French Immersion program starting in Senior Kindergarten and a Middle French Immersion program starting in Grade 4. September 2010 is the last opportunity for students to enter a Late French Immersion program at Grade 7, as this program is nearing the end of its phase-out. Several elementary schools offer alternative program delivery. All schools deliver special education programming to students identified as having special education needs; some schools include specialized classes for specific special education programs. English-as-a-second-language programs are offered in many schools where needed. At the secondary level, one school offers an intensive Fine Arts program, another offers the International Baccalaureate program, and a third offers flexible programming for High-Performance Athletes.

The Continuing Education department serves about 25,000 area residents with credit and interest courses, adult literacy and English-as-a-second-language programs at specific school sites across the Ottawa-Carleton area.

The OCDSB is governed by 12 trustees, elected by eligible voters in 12 trustee electoral zones. The term of office is four years, and 2010 is a municipal election year; in October, voters will chose trustees to serve from December 2010 to November 2014. In addition, two student trustees are elected by students each year; they represent the student perspective, but are not voting members of the Board. The Board annually elects one of its members to serve as Chair of the Board, and meets twice monthly through most of the year. All meetings of the Board and its committees are open to the public, with the exception that specific topics, in accordance with the Education Act, may be discussed in camera.
