Auto-Focus Metering and Macro PhotographyMany single-lens reflex digital cameras, including some from Canon, Nikon, Olympus, Pentax and Sony, allow the user to select what part(s) of the image should, from a range of choices, be used for the automatic focus determination. Because of irregularities in the shape of three-dimensional objects when doing close-up photography, we tend to prefer using only the center of the image for best focus, relying on the depth of field settings discussed above to optimize sharpness for the rest of the subject. The Nikon D80 provides automatic, dynamic and spot auto-focus modes. The nature of our live-moth photography is such that we normally use spot auto-focus, centered on the subject. An additional feature of the D80 is the ability to see about a dozen dark spots in the viewfinder which selectively turn red to indicate which parts of the image are actually in focus. These are very convenient for quickly evaluating focus of macro subjects. |
