16 May 2001 10:49PM (bottom) The
forewing of Nedra ramosula is streaked with silver gray, brown
and white on a black background, and when I look at the streaking, I have
the impression that the lines are somewhat interwoven, some on top of the
others. Note the narrow, elongated orbicular spot almost completely
outlined in black and filled with brownish gray. The reniform spot is
partially outlined in white, especially around the lower end, and filled
with brown which spills out into a brown streak extending nearly to the
terminal line. The streaks end in sharp points of silver white extending
into the fringe along the outer margin. The wingspan ranges from 2.8
to 4.8 cm. The larvae of Nedra ramosula feed on
St. Johnswort (Covell, 1983). Handfield (1999) indicates two
generations of this moth in my general area, with adult flight seasons from
mid-May to late June, and from early July to early September. I
have photographed this species in 2001, on 16 May, 11 June and 25 July; in
2002, on 31 May, on 7 and 30 June, on 30 July, and on 11 August; in 2003, on
17, 23 and 26 May, on 2, 4, 5 and 15 June, and on 23 and 30 July. |
