Hyperstrotia pervertens is one of two species of Hyperstrotia
known to occur in the Ottawa area (J.D. Lafontaine, pers. comm., 2001).
The forewing of Hyperstrotia pervertens is pale gray
slightly tinged with brown, darker and browner towards the costa and palest near
the inner margin. The reniform spot is inconspicuous except for a black
dot at the lower end. The fine antemedial line is slightly darker than the
ground color, preceded by a paler indistinct line along its basal edge.
The postmedial line is similarly fine, angling sharply outward around the
reniform spot, and bounded on its outer edge by a paler line. The
subterminal line is defined mainly by a whitish shade or line along its outer
edge. In the median, there is a vague brownish band, with some darker
scales where it appears to meet the pm line near the inner margin. Covell
(1984) indicates a wingspan from 1.7 to 1.9 cm for this species.
According to Handfield (1999), the host plants for Hyperstrotia
pervertens are American elm and bur oak. He indicates an adult flight season
for my general area from about mid-June nearly to mid-August.
My records to date for Hyperstrotia pervertens (each date
representing "the night of") are in the table below: |
